I'm not one to post on the forums, and I know this isn't exactly constructive right off the bat, but I felt my revulsion warranted a post. Who can I slap for signing off on the heavy pulse laser bubble noises? I'm a hardcore laser-lover, and I feel like my ships just got defiled. What about this sound communicates a sense of destructive power, Imperial might and glory eager to incinerate the rebellious and unworthy? I hope a potential new player doesn't get a chance to hear the soundscape presented in the Incursion trailer which is, imo, one of the most amazing portrayals of horrific space combat I love to show non-player friends. If they go in expecting anything as cool as that (which should be Team Klang's goal more or less, though it is more Sansha-focused), they will be sorely disappointed.
I'd understand if you try to shoot for a subdued sense of that, too, as that could be awesome. But this... this is just carebear soap bubbles. While the sounds could have been thought a bit rough before, now they're so unintimidating I can't believe a beam sounding like that could make its way through melting wax. Yes, I would gladly revert to the old sounds if this is the only option. I'd encourage Team Klang to take another look at them and try again.
Also, what's up with the sucking-air-through-straw sound with warping now? Where's my awesome old soft-noise-leading-up-to-quiet-suspense-before-sonic-boom? That was a great change! Did people dislike that? Weird. Well at least the mid-warp drone is still there. Keep it.
Off-hand suggestion, but maybe for future sound changes we could have posts of possible sounds to gather impressions from the public? A voting system might be a bit much, but if fans of any particular race could pick out a general consensus of a few sound types they liked vs others, maybe it would work out better. Then again, knowing the internet, maybe not. Worth a shot?
On another note, the removal of the jukebox and addition of atmospheric/location-based music is fantastic. I now keep music on at a low volume because when I logged back in to hear the sounds of nullsec I had this reaction to it. I thought there must've been the Dead Space soundtrack running somewhere for sure. I was so elated I made exclamations aloud about it and started immediately googling about sound updates to Eve as soon as I heard it. The music in Freelancer was one of my favorite things about that game, and I think I can see a little inspiration from there in what they're doing with music in Eve now. I completely approve, and I would love new atmospheric tracks (not full of the junk that was in the old jukebox, but real, actually good tracks like the new nullsec ambience).
I could go into more detail about these things, but I can feel the terribleness oozing out of me as a forum poster, dragging the post further and further off-topic from the point of pulse lasers. Maybe I'll start another one for music. But yeah.
Pulse laser sounds. Ew. :( I might have to stick with missile or drone boats til this is fixed. Last I knew, missiles sounded great. |
